Meet Ryan Steele, Workshop Technician
blog
Ryan has worked at Winchester Caravans and Motorhomes for over three years. He started as a trainee technician and has worked his way through a range of courses to qualify and is thoroughly enjoying the role.
Outside of work, his newborn baby daughter is keeping him busy, but he tries to squeeze in a round of golf whenever he’s able to!
What does your role involve?
The role is very varied, no two days are ever the same! I really enjoy the work itself as it’s always very interesting and I like being busy all the time - the days fly by! The role involves carrying our services, PDIs and repairs on caravans, motorhomes and campervans. One day I could be doing a service, the next undertaking a warranty job or PDI (pre delivery inspection). PDIs are carried out on all vehicles we sell, both new and pre owned to ensure everything is in full working order and in tip top condition before the customer receives it.
What do you like about caravanning?
I’ve been caravanning in the past and I love that it allows you to get away from everyday life, visit somewhere different and do some exploring! You get to choose when and where you go, then you simply set up a base and off you go. It’s also great for relaxing as many sites are in quiet and rural locations so you can really make the most of the great outdoors. We went to Devon and not only was it fun, but it was also great to have your home from home with you!
What do you find most rewarding about your role?
When the customer is pleased with the work you’ve done and they tell you so! We greet the customer on arrival, go through the jobs needed and then see them again on collection to hand the vehicle back to them and talk through what has been done. It’s lovely to hear their appreciation for all the work you’ve put in and nice to know they will go off and enjoy their holidays safe in the knowledge all is as it should be with their caravan or motorhome.
What challenges you most?
It can be challenging when you’re expecting a job to be straightforward and it takes so much longer than you thought it would because issues arise along the way - that can be pretty frustrating! That said, when you finally complete it, it’s a great feeling!
Any notable achievements to mention?
I joined Winchester Caravans and Motorhomes as a complete novice and I’m now fully qualified and hold my towing licence. The company has been great, putting me through my training and ensuring I have all I need to succeed. I completed the training over two years, gaining a range of qualifications along the way. I did a combination of on-site and college training, including both theory and practical. I attended Nottingham and Newport Colleges and the training at both was great.
What do you like most about working for Winchester Caravans and Motorhomes?
I love the fact that the day to day work is varied, challenging and interesting; it keeps me wanting to come into work every day! Everyone gets on so well here and it’s nice to be part of a great family business.
