Caravanning and motorhoming gives you a freedom that no other holiday can offer - you can get away at the drop of a hat, you decide where you want to go and for how long and you can spend your time away in any way you please!

What’s more, you’ll be in your own home on wheels so you’ll have all your favourite things and creature comforts with you. Once you’ve chosen a destination you can plan ahead if you want to by booking a site and thinking about what you’ll do and where you’d like to visit, or you can simply play it by ear and see where the wind (or road!) takes you!

Our customers always tell us that they love the freedom leisure vehicle holidays provide. Once you’ve purchased your vehicle and have it all kitted out, it’s easy: you pack some clothes and off you go! Everything is ready and waiting in your van whenever the fancy takes you.

Plus, unlike holidays abroad, there are no worries about language barriers, passports, visas and any remaining Covid restrictions. You simply need to choose your destination, book your pitch and start looking forward to your upcoming adventure!

Go anywhere you like!

The first thing to think about is where you want to go - you can stay close to home or venture further afield, it’s up to you! If it’s your first time towing, it might be a good idea to do a shorter journey to start off with until you gain some confidence and a bit of experience. We’re lucky to have dozens of amazing places to visit right on our doorstep - read our Hampshire, Dorset, Wilshire and West Sussex destination blogs for ideas!

Once you’ve decided where you’re headed, start researching what sites are nearby and what’s available. You can google ‘caravan sites in Dorset’ for example and see what comes up, or you can use a dedicated site finder such as Pitchup or Caravansitefinder. Make a shortlist of features you’d like the site to have and add these to the filters to ensure you get the type of site you’re after. This could be anything from a rural location, to sites with facilities such as shops, laundry and takeaway options, or even ones that allow dogs if you’re hoping to take yours along.

Also consider if you’d like to station yourself in one location or book a few sites and move from one to the next? Both options are easily achievable in a caravan or motorhome as they’re easy to pitch, so it’s down to which option you’d prefer. If you go for pit stops, plan your route logically to ensure you’re getting the best fuel economy.

Investigate your chosen area

It’s a good idea to research where you’re going to see what there is to do; this may also help you decide how long to go for once you know what you need to fit in! Being well-prepared will ensure you have all the info you need and are not disappointed when you get there. You can Google ‘top 10 things to do in…’ (your chosen destination) and you’ll find local area guides as well as Trip Advisor lists, which will give you an idea of what’s around.

How long you go for is up to you!

Many people caravan for long weekends as it's quick and easy to get away last-minute if you choose. You can also go for longer breaks if you have annual leave or are enjoying retirement. So have a think about the duration that would suit you - this may depend on where you’re planning to go - it may not be worth travelling a long way for just a few days and you’ll also need longer if you have a few destinations in mind. Alternatively you could just turn up and stay as long as you fancy - one of the great aspects of the freedom we’ve been talking about!

Site availability

Although of course you could choose not to book ahead, as UK holidays have grown in popularity hugely since the pandemic, it might be a good idea to, or at least check availability of a few sites before you head off. You don’t want to get caught short and have nowhere to pitch, or have to travel to another area to find a site with space.

Everything you need

The kitchen and washroom facilities that caravan and motorhomes have onboard mean that you’re completely self-contained for the duration of your trip - bliss! No communal shower and toilet blocks for you! When it comes to mealtimes, you can cook whatever you fancy in your well-equipped kitchen or treat yourself to some alfresco dining by bringing your BBQ along. Get sizzling!

The kids can run free!

Kids absolutely love caravanning - for them it’s one big adventure! Not only are you going on a road trip to explore different places, but you’re doing it with your own home on wheels in tow! If you opt to pitch up on a rural site, this will give the kids a chance to explore and enjoy the great outdoors. They’ll be off riding their bikes, climbing trees, finding insects and making friends.

Great value for money

After the initial outlay, caravan and motorhome holidays can offer very reasonably-priced trips away. Of course, you can enjoy an extravagant holiday with lots of meals out and expensive day trips if you wish, but you can also do it very cost-effectively if you choose to. Sites will charge a small nightly fee for the pitch and your onboard kitchen means that you can cater for yourselves comfortably, so it won’t cost any more than it would if you were at home! There are also plenty of free days out to be enjoyed - walks in the countryside, woods or along the coast, beach days, bike rides, picnics in the park, visits to local castles or free museums - the list goes on!
